Here's a post that summarizes an article I wrote awhile back, as I think the ideas are still relevant (if not more relevant) today.
If you're wondering what meta means, I'll explain straight away. Let's say you're by the bomb in a 1v1, and it is planted. What options do you have? According to the game as it first appears, you really just have one - defuse it. But through the creativity of persons long forgotten, you actually have many more - fake it and hold the peek, fake it and take a wide angle, try to find the guy, fake it once and hold the peek, fake it twice, and the notorious - stay on it ("FULL D!") The Terrorist likewise has many options other than sitting on top of the bomb and waiting for you (which turns out to be a very bad idea!). And so on.
Whenever gameplay evolves in this way, the players involved are metagaming. They're using information they've uncovered to change the way the game is played. Once an idea emerges that consistently wins over previous ideas, it becomes a dominant strategy, but if the game is balanced eventually someone will find a counter, and so on, as the meta-game evolves.
Is there an end to the meta-game? Well what often happens is it comes full circle. Example: Teams like to rush B, so we nade rush banana as CT. Teams stop doing it because they get countered too much. Teams stop nade rushing banana as CT because it wastes nades if Ts don't ever rush B. Rushing B becomes popular again. And so on.
Well this concept of meta-gaming can be applied to just about anything in the game. Peeking corners is it's own meta-game, as is the 1v1 bomb plant/defuse dynamic, boost tactics, and round tactics (or america term - strats) or even overall strategy. New ideas evolve the meta-game, but the existing possibilites ensure that no one team, strategy, tactic, or whatever, can stay dominant forever, unless the game you're playing is tic-tac-toe, not Counter-Strike.
More to come.

very true, the hardest part for me returning to cs after 3 years was not regaining aim and such, but rather adjusting to the new play style. Players were peaking differently sitting in new spots, crouch running and flashing differently. All these things were known years ago (except crouch running) but not used as frequently as they had been deemed too risky or useless. I.E Inferno ct's pushing alternate. Anyway nice write up
yeah shoutz i hear you man, as a player coming back after 2 yrs i noticed the crouch hoping bullshit too kinda ruins the game imo cuz its a legitimate glitch cuz u cant do that in real life.. and on the other hand its a video game but w/e im not hear to argue about that. And yeah this whole Meta shit is true but i wouldnt call it meta shit.. its more of a natural selection based on what people have adapted to and are used to doing in order to outsmart/outplay other opponents.
On another note, there are way too many cheaters in this game that I dont know weather to respect or accuse kids who own/outplay me in such ways ive never seen before.
*In-game knowledge based in 2004, cs was overall the best and most enjoyable strategic legitimate game to play for its time.

Its all about your unique game play, if you call it Meta gaming its just prude. I think every clan have there own strategies but theres always one common thing whole world does it and it keeps on changing, its simple, Games evolves.
